Identity Workshop

Translating message into meaning

Once the words are in place, it’s time to bring them to life. Our Campaign Identity Workshop explores how your message can be visually shaped, turning ideas into tangible things.

This is where we build the visual foundation of your fundraising campaign together. It’s a half-day, on-site experience that brings your team and ours into the same room to imagine what the campaign will look and feel like in the world. We call it our “showroom experience,” and it’s one of the most energizing parts of the process.

What the workshop is

The Campaign Identity Workshop blends strategy with design. It’s where we explore the space between words and visuals, between what you say and how it shows up.

Our team includes your Strategist and Designer, sometimes supported by project managers and leadership. You bring the voices who can speak to vision and brand alignment—leaders from your organization, board, campaign, marketing team, in-house designers, and campaign counsel.

Four to twelve participants are usually ideal. A smaller group creates space for deep exploration, while a larger one brings a wider range of perspectives. Either way, we want the people in the room to represent the different minds that will shape or steward the brand over time.

What we’ll do together

We’ll guide your team through design-focused exercises, each chosen to clarify your campaign’s identity. While the sequence may shift based on the group and goals, the structure usually includes the following:

20-second gut check

We start with a simple warm-up. We ask everyone to respond to a mix of visual samples with a quick “like” or “dislike” and a reason why. It’s a light way to start talking about brand and get everyone comfortable giving design feedback.

Org vs. campaign relationship

Next, we explore how this campaign should relate to your existing brand. Are we extending the current identity, or stepping into something new? Are we aligned on that decision? This conversation helps set clear boundaries and creative guardrails for what comes next.

Vision boarding

This is the heart of the session. In advance, we ask you to collect examples of branding or design work that you find compelling. During the workshop, each participant makes a case for the samples they brought, explaining why they work. Then, we each select someone else’s example and explain our reasoning. This process narrows the group’s favorites into a shared vision board. Then we ask: What’s missing? What does this board say about our campaign?

Campaign brand expression

To ground the design in real use, we discuss where and how your campaign brand will live. Is it a suite of printed materials? A flagship video? A digital experience? We learn what matters most to your team so we can bring the brand to life in the most effective ways.

What you’ll leave with

You’ll leave this workshop with more than an inspiration board. You’ll have a shared vision for the identity of your campaign, rooted in collaborative choices and strategic intent. It won’t feel random or imposed. It will feel familiar, thoughtful, and true to your values.

After the workshop, our team takes a week or so to explore. Internally, we review the board and notes, then work through an exploratory process to find the strongest direction. From there, we build a focused presentation that brings the campaign identity to life through selected expression pieces.

We only present one direction. We’ve found that showing multiple options leads to unintended mashups and compromises. Instead, we will focus on the best approach and refine it based on your feedback.

If you’d like to involve a broader team or ambassador group during development, we can schedule a separate review session with those individuals (as long as they’re comfortable responding to work in progress).

Why in-person matters

We can run this workshop remotely, but the in-person version works best. There’s a different energy in the room when people are physically present, especially during the vision boarding exercise. That shared experience helps build alignment and trust. Plus, it’s just more fun.

What to expect

We ask everyone to come fully present. That means blocking calendars and minimizing distractions. We’ll take breaks when needed, but aim to make the most of the time together.

This workshop is your best chance to influence how the campaign looks and feels. Your examples will guide our direction, and our conversations will shape the final result. When we present the identity, you’ll see your imagination realized.

This is what co-creation looks like. This is how we build brands that last.
